Screening may be defined as a selection procedure for further investigation, applied to a population of asymptomatic individuals, with no personal or family history to suggest that they are at a higher risk of the disease than the rest of the population. Full size table While the original W&J principles mainly discussed whether screening is worthwhile, revised versions of the W&J principles usually pay more attention to how screening programmes should be implemented.
